In dentistry, zinc oxide eugenol (containing "oil of cloves", clove essential oil) is used as a filling or cement material. It is classified as an intermediate restorative material and has anaesthetic and antibacterial properties. It is sometimes used in the management of dental caries as a "temporary filling". It is possible to purchase clove oil over the counter in many pharmacies, and clove oil can be used as a home remedy for toothache.
When applied to stop a toothache, it is best done with a cotton ear bud, applied directly to the side of the tooth, or directly on to the tooth, on the instance if a hole is present. As to allow for the oil to absorb into the affected area.

Clove oil has an unpleasant taste, so it is advised to prevent the oil from touching the tongue.

It has a boiling point of 250 degrees Celsius
