    ZEDO history
ZEDO started business in late 1999 based in South of Market, San Francisco and was founded by Roy de Souza. It initially intended to create an ad network but quickly changed its focus to being a pure technology company that provides ad serving or ad management technology for websites and advertisers to manage their online advertising campaigns. Its first product was selfTargeted ™ Ad Serving where users choose a keyword or category and only see ads relevant to that keyword or category. That product was used in beta by companies including Lycos.

Today ZEDO has expanded its product range and provides all types of ad serving features. It is now the only ad serving company headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area and is very well known and used by many Silicon Valley Internet companies.

Their global headquarters are located in South of Market, San Francisco at:

    Spyware or Adware?
Like other ad serving companies ZEDO is sometimes linked with the controversy over spyware which is installed to track users as they travel from website to website and record what sites they view and show them ads. However, the company maintains that it is important to understand the difference between ZEDO's ad serving tags and spyware or adware companies.

The companies which are most often referred to as adware represent programs external to the browser that runs on your PC. Adware provides some free services such as PC games or browser tool bars. In return they show the user ads. An example of an adware company is Software995 which provides a free Microsoft Word to pdf converter and also shows you ads while it is converting the files. Adware companies are typically respectable and clearly tell users that they will see ads in return for the free software.

Spyware is a malicious form of adware. Typically it is a program that runs on your PC separately from the browser. Spyware typically does not provide you with free software of any significant value, it appears on your PC without your permission and may monitor your keystrokes and behavior without your permission.

ZEDO maintains that it is a software used by reputable companies and is not spyware or adware. It claims that it does not download any applications to PCs and it does not monitor behavior. They claim that they do not allow spyware companies to use their software in any way and on their web site they ask users to report any suspicion that ZEDO is used by a spyware company or application. It is often confused with Spyware because anti spyware programs find ZEDO cookies and offer to delete them. The company claims that these cookies do signify only that ZEDO has shown ads to the browser and they do not want to show that same ad again. The cookies do not mean that ZEDO has an application running on the PC. ZEDO’s claimed use of cookies is described below.

ZEDO targeting and use of cookies
ZEDO allows advertisers and publishers that use its software to target users according to multiple criteria. Some of the targeting their technology offers users is:
Channels. These are parts of a publisher’s web site e.g. the home page or the news page
Bandwidth: Targeting which means users on broadband or dial up connections
Time of day: Targeting ads to appear only on Saturdays or only between 9am and 5pm
Frequency. Targets ads only to users who have seen less than say 3 ads that day on that site

Some of these targeting parameters are stored in a cookie on the user’s machine. One example is the number of times a user has seen an ad that day is stored in a cookie. This is done so that the user does not get bombarded with the same ad repeatedly.
