Weedshare is an online music store and file sharing system with an innovative payment structure. Through digital rights management it allows tracks to be downloaded and played up to three times for free. In order to further listen to the track and share it with others it must be purchased. Purchase prices are determined by the artist. Of the purchase price 50% goes to the artist or rights holder, 15% goes to Weedshare, and the remaining 35% goes to the people who shared the song. Specifically the person who shared the file with the purchaser earns 20%, the person they received it from earns 10%, and the person they received it from earns 5%. This encourages people to share their music and promote music they like.
Next to many indie artists there are established artists like Sananda Maitreya, the rock group Heart and Chuck D who choose Weedshare to distribute their music.
