Ward County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population was 58,795. Its county seat is Minot6. Its previous county seat was Burlington
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,326 km² (2,056 mi²). 5,213 km² (2,013 mi²) of it is land and 112 km² (43 mi²) of it (2.11%) is water. Much of the county is flat to rolling plains. The southern reaches of the county are dotted with numerous small lakes, water neither sloping towards the Souris River basin nor Lake Sakakawea. The population density was 11/km² (29/mi²). There were 25,097 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.40% White, 2.22% Black or African American, 2.07% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 1.91% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 23,041 households out of which 34.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% were married couples living together, 8.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% were non-families. 27.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.01. In the county the population was spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 13.00% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 19.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.50 males. The median income for a household in the county was $33,670, and the median income for a family was $41,342. Males had a median income of $27,980 versus $19,830 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,926. About 7.90% of families and 10.80% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.50% of those under age 18 and 8.40% of those age 65 or over.
