    Wanderlust (Middle High German: wandern, to wander, and Lust, desire) is a German loanword. It is commonly defined as a strong desire to travel, or by having an itch to get out and see the world *. Some consider it to be a simple linguistic compound of wander and lust.

    Usage

    The word was first recorded into English dictionaries by 1902 *. In German, the term Wanderlust sounds old-fashioned today. To retranslate the English Wanderlust in the sense of "love of travel", the expression Fernweh is more appropriate.
