In the Star Trek fictional universe, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) (or Enterprise-B) is a modified ''Excelsior'' class starship, commissioned in 2293 and initially captained by John Harriman. The Enterprise-B is the third starship commissioned since the Federation's founding to carry the name. Although it does not appear until Star Trek: Generations, the presence of an Excelsior class model amid the models of other starships ''Enterprise'' aboard the ''Enterprise''-D at least informed viewers of its class.

    Maiden voyage

The first mission of the Enterprise is to take a number of reporters, Captains James Kirk and Montgomery Scott and Commander Pavel Chekov on a ride around the solar system. It is during this demonstration that the Enterprise receives a distress call from the transport Lakul which, along with the Robert Fox, is transporting El-Aurian refugees from their homeworld. Being the only ship within range, the Enterprise responds – despite lacking a tractor beam, photon torpedoes, and medical staff. Harriman and his crew try to free the ships by a variety of means to no avail. After one of the ships is destroyed, Harriman takes Kirk's advice and takes the Enterprise into the rift. When the Enterprise gets within transporter range, Scott is able to rescue 47 out of the 150 people aboard the Lakul before its destruction. However the Enterprise is now trapped in the rift, and her hull integrity is failing fast. Scott believes the navigational deflector can be adapted to emit a blast that can free the ship. The reconfiguration requires manual adjustments, which Kirk performs. As the Enterprise moves free of the rift, an energy discharge from the rift strikes the ship near the deflector dish, shearing through several sections in the stardrive hull, include the area in which Kirk was working. With that area exposed to space, Kirk goes missing and is presumed dead.

    Later missions
The Enterprise-B is only seen in the movie Generations. It is assumed that the ship was repaired and began regular duty. Further details on her, such as specific missions, crew, and her decommission date are not known. The non-canon Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual indicates that this Enterprise was involved in a long-term exploration of unexplored portions of the Goumari area of the galaxy and made first contact with a number of civilizations.

Several novels offer Enterprise-B-related stories, including Peter David's The Captain's Daughter. More recently, authors filled in several gaps in Star Trek lore with the Lost Era series of books, one of which includes includes a mission of the Enterprise-B. While not canon, Serpents Among the Ruins suggests that the Enterprise-B was involved in the Tomed Incident of 2311, the last official contact between the Romulans and the United Federation of Planets until 2364 (TNG: "The Neutral Zone"). These books also suggest that Demora Sulu – daughter to Enterprise and Enterprise-A helmsman Hikaru Sulu and herself the Enterprise-B's helmsman in Generations –
is promoted to captain and given command of the Enterprise-B after Captain Harriman steps down from that position.

In the ship's legacy section of the Enterprise-D cut-away poster by Christopher Cushman, a Captain Tomas Johnson, Jr. is listed as commanding officer. However, no additional information is given about him.
