Tenaya Canyon is a canyon in Yosemite National Park, California, USA, located at .
Hiking Tenaya Canyon Disclaimer The official map provided by the Park Rangers at Yosemite contains the warning: "Hiking in Tenaya Canyon is dangerous and strongly discouraged". Tenaya Canyon is a pleasantly unpopular hike in Yosemite. A practical trailhead would be from the Yosemite valley floor, but few hikers ascend the canyon from below. The little-used trails are prone to coverage by scree; the random rock cover that makes walking unpleasant at best, and dangerous at worst. The route upcanyon in the streambed itself is blocked by several steep polished cliffs. Traversing downcanyon from the top requires technical gear to rappel past these cliffs - rope, harness, belay device, anchoring supplies, etc. Many hikers have accidentally fallen and died attempting to downclimb or bypass these obstacles. From the top of the canyon, which may be glimpsed from the Tioga road to Tuolumne Meadows, the signature Half Dome of Yosemite dominates the canyon. Clouds Rest towers over the central canyon. From the bottom of the canyon, which leads into Yosemite Valley, Mirror Lake and a short trail around it are quite well used even by day hikers. Canyoneering Starting from Tenaya Lake, there are three short rappels, newly bolted by the ASCA in 2003, along with at one mandatory swim at normal water levels. This canyoneering adventure is not appropriate for those without previous experience and competence with rappelling and canyon navigation. Competent climbers can often skip one or two of the rappels by downclimbing. | ||||||||
