Techie has grown to have two meanings. One is more a derivative of geek while the other is a name for stage crew.==Techie (Technology)== Techie is a term, derivative of the word technology, for a person who displays a great, sometimes even obsessive, interest in technology, as well as high-tech devices, particularly computers. Some techies express a disregard for any technology that could possibly be considered obsolete, even if the technology or process in question might only be considered obsolete within the techie community. Consequently, techies are also often early adopters. With the increased spending power of techies, a few media outlets exist that cater solely to them, most notably Wired, Slashdot, and, while it existed, TechTV. Geeks or nerds are often also considered to be techies; however, the reverse is not necessarily true and more people who would not be considered "geeks" are becoming techies, especially with the advancement of technology in recent years. Another possible and less common use of the word is as a replacement of the description of a person as ignorant, especially when technology of some kind is involved. For instance, consider a person who believes that he or she knows the proper way of performing something (with technology, like creating a circuit board.) However, he or she actually does not know how to properly perform the task, but is unwilling to listen to suggestions from more knowledgeable people. This person could be considered a "techie." The tone of the word is similar to that of "geek" or "nerd."
Techie (Stage Crew) Techie is also often used to describe someone who operates or oversees the operation of technical equipment and systems in performing art theatres. This includes, but is not limited to, set construction, sound system operation, lighting design and board operation, rigging, flying, and stage management. It should be noted that some professional entertainment industry technicians dislike being named a "techie", and would rather be referred to as technicians. "Techies" sometimes have many various nicknames and sayings. For instance, a popular term for an industrial accident in some theatres is called a jonathan after a possibly mythical technician who repeatedly injured himself twice a month for the enirety of a project. Another popular nickname for techies is "unsungs" as a term of endearment usually used by the cast, but as with everything it varies from theatre to theatre. Also a commonly used phrase in high school theatre, mainly by the people themselves not other people like in professional theatre. See also | ||||||||
