    Introduction

The Tech Law Prof is a career model for professors, pioneered by Lawrence Lessig in the 1990s. The job adds to usual academic profile with some of the features of entrepreneurs, journalists and policy advocates. The model today fits a growing numbers of law professors in the tech field.

Typically the Tech Law Prof is a tenured professor at an American law school. However he or she will also typically write regularly for a newspaper or magazine, and may keep a well-read blog. As an entrepreneur, he or she will start non-profits, or companies, and sometimes also litigate impact cases. He or she tends to writes books for a trade press audience. Some travel widely and speak to non-law audiences. Generally, the level of interaction with the tech industry is quite pronounced, as is the engagement with non-legal audiences.

Over history, professors who engage in external activities are not exactly a new phenommenon. Tech Law Profs, however, seem to be a distinct and growing career model, paralleling the differences between internet companies and more traditional firms.
