    Stanford is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 13,315 at the 2000 census.
    Stanford is an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County and is adjacent to the city of Palo Alto. Stanford, California is a valid postal address, and has its own post office and ZIP codes: 94305 (campus buildings) and 94309 (post-office boxes).

    The CDP of Stanford is mostly made up of Stanford University.

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.44%) is water.

    Demographics
    As of the census of 2000, there were 13,314 people, 3,207 households, and 1,330 families residing in the community. The population density was 1,869.4/km² (4,849.8/mi²). There were 3,315 housing units at an average density of 465.4/km² (1,207.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 60.40% White, 4.90% Black or African American, 0.72% Native American, 25.57% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 3.65% from other races, and 4.60% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

    There were 3,207 households out of which 17.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% were married couples living together, 1.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 58.5% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.73.

    The age distribution is 7.2% under the age of 18, 58.5% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 6.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. Both the age distribution and median age are typical of college communities. For every 100 females there are 118.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 119.4 males.

    The median income for a household in the community was $41,106, and the median income for a family was $88,596. Males had a median income of $67,250 versus $56,991 for females. The per capita income for the community was $22,443. About 11.1% of families and 21.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.6% of those under age 18 and 1.8% of those age 65 or over.
