Split peas are a split form of certain peas which are commonly used to make pea soup.
Yellow split peas are sometimes referred to as a synonym for toor dal (split pigeon peas) or chana dal (split desi chickpeas). This is incorrect, however. Although the appearance is similar to chana dal (toor dal is thinner) split peas have a different taste and a greater tendency to thicken the liquid when cooked, compared to most other legumes.
