A specialist is a person who is able to solve some predefined class of problems or to execute well some class of tasks, therefore specialists exist in every domain of human activity. Every science, engineering and other domain of social, administrative and, in general, structured activity, has own specialists. Usually, they are officially recognized by proper authorities composed of recognized experts.
For example:
At the New York Stock Exchange a specialist is a trader who makes a market in one or several stocks and holds the limit order book for those stocks.
