Sir (Vincent) Serei Eri, GCMG (born 1936 in Moveave, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea-died May 25, 1993 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) is often quoted as being the first Papua New Guinean national to write a novel, The Crocodile in English. It was published in 1970 but Ligeremaluoga is quoted as having published a book called "The Erstwhile Savage" in 1932. It was an account of his life up until approximately 1932 He was trained as a school teacher and later became Director of Education. A senior public servant, Eri founded the People's Action Party in 1986 was a member of the National Parliament. After independence in 1975 he was appointed PNG's first Consul General in Australia and, under the name Sir Serei Eri, briefly served as Governor-General (27 February 1990–4 October 1991). He was dismissed from that office when he refused to remove deputy prime minister Ted Diro, who had been found guilty of corruption, from office. A married father of six, he died at age 57.
