    Overview

Founded in Cedar Rapids, Iowa by Arthur Collins in 1933 as Collins Radio Company, the company provided radio communications equipment to the 1933 South Pole expedition of Rear Admiral Richard Byrd. As it grew, the company formed close ties with the US side of the space race, supplying radio equipment for the Apollo, Gemini and Mercury programs. In 1973, Skylab used equipment supplied by Collins.

After facing financial difficulties, the Collins Radio Company was purchased by Rockwell International in 1973. In 2001 the avionics division of Rockwell International was spun-off to form the current Rockwell Collins, Inc.. The company has acquired several companies, including Hughes-Avicom's in-flight entertainment business, Intertrade Ltd., Flight Dynamics, K Systems, Inc. (Kaiser companies), Communication Solutions, Inc., Airshow, Inc., and TELDIX GmbH.

The company today employs over 17,000 people and has an annual turnover in excess of 3.4 billion US dollars. Its chairman, president and CEO is Clayton M. Jones.
