    The rad is a unit of radiation dose, with symbol rad. Rad stands for "radiation absorbed dose". It is superseded in the SI by the gray; the United States is the only country that still uses the rad. Its continued use is "strongly discouraged" * by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
    1 rad = 0.01 gray (Gy) = 0.01 joule of energy absorbed per kilogram of tissue.
