The Power of Veto is an item in the TV Series Big Brother. It was introduced in the third season of the US series, and it exists only in the USA and Brazil versions. The Power of Veto is awarded in a weekly challenge, and allows a player to veto one of the Head of Household's nomination choices. If used, the Head of Household must immediately select another houseguest to nominate. The player that held the POV and the player removed from the nominees can not be nominated. It was rarely used during its first season because a nominated houseguest could not use it to veto themselves.

Originally, every houseguest competed in the weekly veto competitions. The rules were changed in USA season 5 to allow only six competitors: the Head of Household, both nominees, and one player of each of their choosing. In season 7, nominees could no longer choose players for the veto competition, instead, players were chosen at random in an attempt to prevent "backdooring" (but happened anyway).

    The Golden Power of Veto

Introduced in the final veto contest of Big Brother USA season 3, The Golden Power of Veto allowed a nominated houseguest to veto themselves. During season 4, the Golden Power of Veto replaced the "regular" veto. The Golden Power of Veto was used in seasons 5 and 6 as well.

    The Diamond Power of Veto

Introduced in the final veto contest of season 4, The Diamond Power of Veto was essentially the same as the Golden Power of Veto. With only four houseguests left, the winner of the Veto could choose (with the exception of the Head of Household) who to evict -- if a nominee used it on themselves, they would become the only houseguest able to vote for eviction, and if the one houseguest who was not nominated used it on a nominated houseguest, only one houseguest would remain eligible for eviction, and theredore, be evicted by default. The Diamond Power of Veto did not appear in subsequent seasons.
