Political parties in North Korea are heavily tied to the function of the government. North Korea has several parties, but the Workers Party of Korea (more commonly, the Korean Worker's Party or KWP) has a stranglehold on political power.

    Official parties in North Korea

North Korea is a single-party state. This means that only one political party, the Workers Party of Korea, is legally allowed to hold effective power. Although minor parties are allowed, they are legally required to accept the leadership of the dominant party. North Korean politics works therefore on the united front principle common in communist countries. The North Korean front is called the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. It consists of the following official political parties:

Workers Party of Korea (Chŏson Rodong-dang, also translated as Workers' Party of Korea and Korean Workers Party)

    North Korean opposition parties

There is currently no known organized opposition in North Korea that is independently verifiable. However, there are exiled dissident groups, spread out around the world, that are against the authoritarian regime that is in place.

Exiled and informal parties include the Korean Liberal Democrats and the Korean Greens.
