    Piety is a desire and willingness to perform spiritual, often ascetic rituals. It is a traditional virtue because in some religions, it is the only known way to win the favor or forgiveness of deities, that is, to "propitiate" them.
    Pietism as a movement within Lutheranism, was strong from the late-17th century to the mid-18th century

    It is humility and pacificity before God or 'the gods'.
