"Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" is a 1965 recording by James Brown. Part one of the three-part recording was issued as a single the same year, and became a groundbreaking hit record.

The song is widely considered the first recording to showcase what later became Brown's signature musical style, and marks the beginning of the development of the musical genre of funk. As Brown sings the praises of an old man brave enough to get out on the dance floor of a nightclub, Brown's band provides a horn-heavy backdrop with a prominent rhythm and an electric guitar riff for a hook.

Released as a single during the summer of 1965, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" became a crossover hit, and was Brown's first single, after nine years of working as a recording artist, to hit the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, peaking at number seven. On the Billboard R&B singles chart, "Papa" reached the number one spot and remained there for eight weeks. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" is today considered one of Brown's signature songs, and has been covered by many artists, both within the R&B genre and outside of it.
