Panther Express is a content delivery network or "CDN" based in New York City. The company was founded in August 2005 by Dwight Merriman, Kevin Ryan, Ryan Nitz and Pablo Mayrgundter. All the founders came from DoubleClick, a company co-founded by Dwight Merriman and headed by Kevin Ryan. Dwight and Kevin were the initial investors in Panther Express and Shopwiki. In July of 2006, Panther Express closed its first venture capital round and raised $6 million. In March of 2005, the current industry leader Akamai purchased Speedera, the second largest player in the space for $130 million. This acquisition by Akamai left the industry ripe for competition and allowed Akamai to once again enjoy pricing power. One of the goals in the formation of Panther Express was to further commoditize the CDN industry and make it more affordable for companies doing business on the Internet. Companies around the world are continuing to expand their businesses online but geographic distribution of data on the Internet is still a problem because of the existing physical constraints of the Internet. One of the main physical limitations of the Internet is the speed of light. Data located thousands of kilometers away still has high latency in being delivered because light can only travel so fast through the fiber channels that comprise the Internet. Panther Express has a vast, globally distributed Anycast Dns network. Panther Express modeled its DNS Anycast network design after the Internet's Root Nameservers. These root servers are a core component of the Internet's infrastructure.
