This is the Open Source version of the Logos Machine Translation System (MT), which is among the largest and most powerful ones. It admits different formats of documents and in a short amount of time they are translated into the two different languages available so far. The result, a draft translation, is already quite accurate. But if necessary, the result can be modified later by a human translator. It is quicker and cheaper as it maintains the format of the original document in a high degree. Logos does not claim to replace human translators; rather, it aims to enhance the professional translator's work environment.
History Logos Corporation has been working in MT systems for over 27 years. Everything began with an English-Vietnamese translation system created in 1972 (during the American-Vietnamese war). Seven years later, the Logos Group was founded. From then on and for last 25 years Logos has been developed as a single-source language solutions company. Recently the DFKI has been working in an open version of the original Logos program: OpenLogos. Today this tool is meant to be one of the most important ones and a real competitor to other major MT systems such as Systran or IBM's WebSphere. Its landmark are both its accuracy and the fact that it does not discard the need of a human translator. This new version works with Linux and is available for individuals, universities, translators...completely for free (yet under a license). Languages Up to this point the OpenLogos MT only translates from German and English into the most important European languages (French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese).
