New Caprica is the fictional name given to a relatively desolate but habitable planet in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. The capital of New Caprica is New Caprica City.

New Caprica is named in honor of Caprica, one of the original Twelve Colonies. It was accidentally discovered when a ship received incorrect jump coordinates. It is located in a region of space whose electromagnetic radiation makes surveying difficult.

Later, the planet was settled by the civilian population of the fleet under the leadership of President Gaius Baltar. It became the key issue during the election. Although many people in the military and incumbent government had reservations about doing so, the civilian population desired to land. Baltar used this to win the election.

Although things appeared to be going well at first, problems began to develop as time went by. There were medicine shortages, and many were growing sick. There were labour problems, and strikes. Baltar became depressed and resorted to alcoholism.

Just over one year after settlement, a Cylon fleet who had, over a light year away, detected signs of a nuclear explosion (itself actually a Cylon suicide bombing) arrived at the planet and promptly occupied it (the military patrol guarding New Caprica, undermanned and heavily outnumbered, chose to jump away rather than attempt a suicidal defense).

Baltar surrendered to the Cylon forces, who occupy the human settlements with a strong military presence.

    New Caprica resistance
The Resistance was led by Colonel Saul Tigh, former XO aboard the Battlestar ''Galactica'' and right hand man to Admiral Adama. Tigh's most important lieutenants are Galen Tyrol and Samuel Anders, who personally oversee the planning and execution of strikes against the Cylons.

After Tigh's release from a Cylon detention facility, he has ordered an increase in violence against the Cylons in the form of suicide-bombings. Among the most notable of these bombers is Duck, a resistance fighter who successfully infilitrated the New Caprica Police.

The Resistance also routinely performed stikes against the Cylons with the hopes of destroying supply chains, damaging Cylon spacecraft, and killing as many Humanoid and Centurion Cylons as possible.

The main source of information to The Resistance had been someone deep within the Cylon infrastructure. Unknown to them, this informant was Felix Gaeta, another officer aboard the Galactica. He has provided useful information that had led to strikes against the Cylons. Most importantly, however, Gaeta had provided The Resistance with information that has enabled them to make contact with the Colonial Fleet led by Admiral Adama and his son Lee Adama.

With their goals in mind, The Resistance successfull rendezvoused with marines from the Colonial Fleet.

In the episode Exodus Part II, the Resistance successfully oversees the evacuation of New Caprica. They initiate firefights and explosions across the city, distracting the Cylons and giving pilots time to get their ships of the ground and escape.

    New Caprica police

The New Caprica Police Academy and Police Headquarters are located in Caprica City. The NCP police recruit program was infiltrated by Duck, whom turned suicide bomber and killed 30 recruits.

Members of the NCP are regarded as traitors to the human cause and have to hide their identities when dealing with fellow humans.

The captain of the NCP is Jammer a member of the New Caprica Resistance. He hides his collaborationist activities from the Resistance while he hides Resistance activities from the NCP.

    Battle of New Caprica

The Battle of New Caprica is fought by the Battlestars Galactica and Pegasus to rescue the 39,000 human survivors that had settled on New Caprica and had later fallen under Cylon occupation during the episode "Exodus, Part 2".

The battle begins as Colonial Raptors launch decoy drones to simulate the appearance of the Battlestars on DRADIS to draw Cylon forces away from New Caprica. At this point the Galactica performs and intra-atmospheric FTL jump in order to launch Viper squadrons to fight Cylon Raiders and eliminate ground targets. The Galactica them performs another FTL jump into low orbit and begins to engage first two, then four Cylon Basestars.

The inhabitants of New Caprica, having recovered the launch keys to their spacecraft, board them and begin to lift off and perform FTL jumps to pre-arranged coordinates.

The Galactica sustains damage to its FTL drive and cannot leave, only the intervention of the Pegasus (its captain, Lee Adama, having defied an order to stay with the Fleet) turns the tide of battle. The Pegasus engages the attacking Basestars, destroying one with it's forward batteries. The Pegasus then locks itself onto a collision course with a Basestar and its skeleton crew abandon ship on several Raptors. After destroying the Basestar, the starboard flight pod comes loose and destroys a third Basestar.
