The city of Muzaffarpur famous for Litchis (a fruit found only in a few locations in the world) is a vibrant city of North Bihar situated on the bank of Himalayan snow-fed perennial river Burhi Gandak. Muzaffarpur is an administrative district in the state of Bihar in India. The district headquarters are located at Muzaffarpur. The district occupies an area of 3173 km² and has a population of 3,743,836 (as of 2001).Mark Twain ,while on way to Kathmandu, stayed in the Local Muzaffarpur Club and relished this beautiful Eastern India town.

Muzaffarpur is a leading centre of education and it boasts of a medical and an engineering college and one of the oldest universities of north Bihar (Bihar University, now known as B R a Bihar University). Langat Singh College affiliated to the University of Bihar had the likes of Dinkar (a famous Hindi poet),Dr Rajendra Prasad (the first president of India) and Acharya J B Kriplani as its faculty members.

It is also famous for sugar cane and the district has a few sugar mills -now old and dilapidated. It had been the commercial hub of North Bihar and the Wholesale centre of all types of Mill Clothes in famous Marwris community dominated Suta Patti.

Muzaffarpur is a rapidly growing city. The population explosion in the last decade has been phenomenal. However, this has led to a host of problems, the most prominent of them being drainage and sanitation. Due to the topography of the city (the central parts of the city are lower than the outer areas), drainage has always been a problem area. In recent years this has been greatly compounded by the population explosion, not due to lack of engineering and technological expertise, but most notably, due to extremely poor governance and rampant corruption at every level of the city, district, and state government machineries. This is further fuelled by extremely poor work culture and un-buisnesslike attitude among locals.

The downtown area of Muzaffarpur is known as Kalyani Chowk and Saraiyagunj. Both areas are densely populated with small shops selling a plethora of goods and services ,with colourful settings and buzzling with mix of crowds. Closeby is the popular Kali temple and Garib Sthan ( Shiva Temple) , regularly frequented by Hindu worshippers. A temple of Maa Durga, popularly known as Devi Mandir is situated in Ramna. Apart from it there are several other new and old temples in the town.

Thousands of rich and poor villagers migrated to this ttown from nearby villages in the rapid uncontrolled Urbanisation in post-independence India. This led to opening up of many private primary, middle and high schools ,coaching institutes and colleges. Many students from these have done well in their lives - some of them highly placed in India and abroad.
