Minehunters are mine-countermeasure ships that detects and destroys individual naval mines. Minesweepers on the other hand try to clear mined areas without prior detection of mines. A minehunter uses sonar to detect mines and then sends out divers or remotely operated vehicles to inspect and neutralize the mine, often by mounting small charges that are detonated remotely.
