Milliard is a French-derived word meaning the number 109 (one thousand million). It is unused in American English and is rare in other forms of English, though occasionally encountered. During the 20th century, the short scale "billion" has become the normal term in the entire English-speaking world.
"Milliard" is a common word to many other languages other than English, for example "miljard" in Dutch, "Milliard" in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish, "Milliarde" in German, "Miliardo" in Italian, "Milijarda/Милијарда" in Serbian, "miljardi" in Finnish and מיליארד () in Modern Hebrew. For the history of the term, see long scale.
