Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (1987) is a cartoonish boxing video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System designed, developed, and published by Nintendo. It is a sequel to the arcade game Punch-Out!!. The game features a boxer named Little Mac working his way up the professional boxing circuits, facing a series of colorful, fictional boxers; leading to a final fight with real-life boxer Mike Tyson.
Gameplay The game requires good reflexes in reaction to the computer-controlled boxers' moves, as the more advanced boxers give very little indication of their coming moves. Punch-Out!! incorporates a lot of variety to be a challenge to even the most experienced of players. Still, many have mastered Punch-Out!! by learning the computer-controlled boxers' consistent patterns. Mario plays a cameo role as the referee and Doc Louis serves as Little Mac's faithful trainer and corner man. Other Mario characters can be seen in the audience. The opponents The opponents the player has to face in the four boxing circuits are: Minor Circuit Major Circuit The Major Circuit is accessible by the code 005-737-5423. World Circuit The World Circuit is accessible by the code 777-807-3454 . (The World Champion, Super Macho Man, can be reached by several codes, including 707-207-3070, 237-210-7938, and 659-493-5070.) The Dream Fight Another World Circuit Another World Circuit is accessible only via a code. Enter 135-792-4680, but after the last digit, instead of finishing the password normally, press A, B, and Select simultaneously. Other versions In 1990, towards the end of the NES's run, the game was re-released as Punch-Out!!, with the Tyson character replaced by Mr. Dream. Mr. Dream fought in the same fashion as Tyson, but had cosmetic changes to his face and skin color. It is widely believed that Tyson was removed because of his troubles with the law; however, he was removed due to the fact that his contract with Nintendo had expired and was not renewed. In addition, he had lost the title to Buster Douglas. These events also contributed to severe modifications for the planned Nintendo sequel, which was eventually released as Power Punch II, featuring a modified Tyson (now named Mark Tyler) in pink trunks fighting alien characters aboard a space station. This game was inspired by the 1984 arcade game Punch-Out!!, also by Nintendo, as well as by its sequel Super Punch-Out!!. The arcade version does not use Tyson's image or name, but many of the other characters are taken from one of the two arcade games. Glass Joe, Bald Bull, and Mr. Sandman are from Punch-Out!!, while Great Tiger, Soda Popinski (aka Vodka Drunkenski), and Super Macho Man are from Super Punch-Out!!. Furthermore, Piston Honda is nearly identical to Punch-Out's Piston Hurricane sans visual alterations. In Animal Crossing, one of the unlockable NES games is Punch-Out!! (Mr. Dream version). This is one of the rarer NES games to get. One of the easiest ways to acquire the code is to go on the Animal Crossing European site. However, this site also provides passwords for four other games, and only one is given out at a time. Periodically, the game featured on the site changes. The game Super K.O. Boxing, made by Glu Mobile for the cell phone in July of 2006, has an appearance and feel strikingly similar to the old Punch-Out games.
