Middleborough is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 19,941 at the 2000 census. History Middleborough was first settled in 1660 and was officially incorporated in 1669. The cranberry capital of the world, Middleborough is also the second-largest town in Massachusetts in terms of square mileage. Politically, the town is also an enclave of conservative leaning. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 187.3 km² (72.3 mi²). 180.1 km² (69.6 mi²) of it is land and 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it (3.80%) is water. Middleborough is the second largest municipality in Massachusetts, smaller only than Plymouth Ironically, Middleborough is not near Northborough, Southborough, Westborough, or Marlborough. Nor is it even that close to its other Massachusetts "boro" towns of Attleboro or Foxboro. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there were 19,941 people, 6,981 households, and 5,117 families residing in the town. The population density was 110.7/km² (286.7/mi²). There were 7,249 housing units at an average density of 40.2/km² (104.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.12% White, 1.26% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.78% of the population. There were 6,981 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.23. In the town the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $52,755, and the median income for a family was $59,173. Males had a median income of $40,854 versus $28,570 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,246. About 3.5% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.4% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
