    Department of Materials Science of Moscow State University (MSU) (Russian: Факультет наук о материалах МГУ) was founded in 1991 at the base of Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics and Department of Mechanics and Mathematics. Former name was High School of Materials Science (Высший колледж наук о материалах in Russian). Its purpose was declared as preparation of the experts of new generation with extremely high level and breadth of knowledge.
    Today the department has about 150 students. Although the department is small, there are some members of Russian Academy of Sciences among its lecturers. Most of its lecturers are employees of other MSU departments or RAS institutes. It is the only educational institution in Russian specialising in materials science.

    The educational program in the department includes fundamental study on mathematics, physics, chemistry and mechanics, and also number of specially developed practical works.

    The annual reception in the department makes 25 students.

    The education lasts 5,5 years for specialist's degree or 4 years for bachelor's degree and 2 years more for master's degree.

    The dean and founder of the department is Yury Dmitrievich Tretyakov.
