Louisa County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 12,183. Its county seat is Wapello6.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,082 km² (418 mi²). 1,041 km² (402 mi²) of it is land and 41 km² (16 mi²) of it (3.77%) is water. The population density was 12/km² (30/mi²). There were 5,133 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.91% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.56% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 12.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 4,519 households out of which 35.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% were married couples living together, 8.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% were non-families. 22.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.11. In the county the population was spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.00 males. The median income for a household in the county was $39,086, and the median income for a family was $43,972. Males had a median income of $31,293 versus $22,085 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,644.
