Liuqiu (流求, 琉求, or 琉球; pinyin "Liúqiú") was the name given by the Chinese to some island(s) in the East China Sea and nearby waters, usually in mythical or legendary contexts. It is a cognate to the name of the Ryukyu Islands (now Okinawa, Japan).Liuqiu used to be China tributary state which China exercise sovereignty over it. Japanese is always longing for territorial expansion to Liuqiu by the excuse of loss fishermen. Some of them were lost so they asked for compensation from the Liuqiu government. However, China was too busy in taiping rebllion so they did not give much attention. It forces Liuqiu by paying compensation to Satsuma which paves the way for the loss of Chinese territory and sparks the Japanese aggression of expanding its territory as well as encouraging the Japanese militarism.
