Technical databases can be found here. In the FreeSpace universe, the sizes and strength of combat craft and warships go in order of (from smallest to largest) Fighter, Bomber, Cruiser, Corvette, Destroyer and Juggernaut. Fighters are small and are typically armed with four to six primary guns and one or two secondary missile banks, though they can carry more. They usually perform the duties of escorting larger ships to defend them against bombers or enemy fighters). Although they are often used against all forms of ships in Descent: FreeSpace and are highly useful in all roles, the new damage system in FreeSpace 2, combined with better capital ship defenses, makes them far less useful in anti-capital ship warfare in FreeSpace 2. Thus, they are rarely effective against capital ships on their own. Fighters can be split into two basic groups: light fighters and heavy assault fighters. The former sacrifices loadout capacity and armor for speed and maneuverability, making them an excellent craft for dogfights, but virtually sub-optimal in terms of attacking larger ships like cruisers and, in some cases, even a convoy of transports. The latter sacrifices speed and maneuverability for loadout capacity and armor, making them a good choice for attacking transport convoys and sometimes, even capital ships. However, in dogfights, heavy assault fighters are virtually sitting ducks, giving faster craft a chance to fly circles around them. Bombers are designed primarily to attack cruisers and corvettes with large payloads of bombs and warheads. They usually boast the heaviest shields and thickest hulls of any small combat craft, and sometimes mount one or two turrets. However, only the largest bombers are effective against destroyers, and even then their effectivness is minimal. Against juggernauts, even the strongest bombers, armed with the most powerful warheads, are almost completely ineffective. With the anti-capital ship beam cannons present onboard every class of warship in FreeSpace 2, bombers have been relegated primarily to tactical support and destroying vital subsystems on these larger vessels, a task that they excel at. Their relatively low speed and maneuverability make them prime targets for fighter pilots. Cruisers are the smallest of warships, measuring between 200 and 400 meters in length. These ships are normally lightly armed and are not considered capital ships. While these ships can be fairly menacing to light fighters, small groups of heavy fighters can produce enough firepower to destroy them. The anti-warship weapons of these vessels are only truly effective against other cruisers, although there have been some exceptions to these rules. In the FreeSpace 2 timeline, cruisers are gradually being supplanted by the more heavily armed and maneuverable corvettes. Corvettes are warships measuring about 600 to 800 meters long. These ships have fairly high speeds, as well as relatively thick hulls, and are commonly used to engage other cruisers and corvettes in many defensive and offensive roles, as well as to attack destroyers and provide anti-fighter cover. While corvettes are not armed with some of the heavy weaponry found on destroyers, a corvette's main weaponry is still powerful enough to be effective in many roles. Unlike cruisers, corvettes are an imposing presence that will require a dedicated assault to dispose of. Destroyers are massive capital ships averaging 2000 meters in length. They are far better armed than smaller ships, and mount at least one fighterbay. In addition, they are armed with powerful weaponry including heavy anti-capital ship beam cannons, capable of destroying smaller warships with a single shot, though the destroyer's main weapon is typicaly its fighter and bomber wings. Destroyers also have a command crew on board that enables them to oversee and coordinate several sorties at once. Although the hull plating of destroyers are better than those of cuisers and corvettes, these ships must have sufficient fighter cover and escort at all times for they are high priority targets due to their logistical importance. Juggernauts are almost ludicrously huge ships over 5000 meters in length. Due to their nearly indestructible nature, they can easily wipe out fleets of enemy ships. They are often armed with large numbers of the heaviest beam cannons available, making them impervious to assault by capital ships, while their incredibly thick hull renders assaults by fighters, bombers, cruisers, corvettes and even some destroyers useless. The only real threat to a juggernaut is another juggernaut.
