The term postcode in the UK is used rather loosely for any component of a postcode. The postcode proper is the full unit postcode, for example EH15 2JJ. There are about 1.8 million of these in the UK. The use of the term postal district for that level of the hierarchy had been established with the London postal districts long before postcodes were introduced. See:
