This is a list of the countries of the world sorted by total area. The list ranks sovereign states and dependent territories that are recognized by the United Nations as countries. Total areas are included, covering land and inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Marine internal waters, territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones are not included, and nor are various countries' claims to parts of Antarctica. Source Note Israel has annexed and administers the Golan Heights, but its territorial claim is disputed in international law and the area is generally not considered by the international community to be Israeli territory.
