La Repubblica (meaning: "The Republic") is an Italian daily newspaper. It was founded in 1976 in Rome by the Espresso group led by Eugenio Scalfari and Carlo Caracciolo and the Mondadori group. It has since kept a left-wing political stance.
After Silvio Berlusconi acquired the group in 1990, the Italian political establishment led by the Christian Democrat Giulio Andreotti forced him to sell the newspaper to Carlo De Benedetti, who still owns it. It is now directed by Ezio Mauro.
