La Línea de la Concepción (generally known as La Línea) is a town in Spain, in the province of Cádiz in Andalucia. As of January 1 2005 it had a population of approximately 62,682. It lies on the eastern isthmus of the Bay of Gibraltar on the border with the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, with which it has close economic and social links. The town derives its name from the línea or boundary line separating Spain from Gibraltar. Many of its people, known in Spanish as linenses or piojosos (louse-infested). Gibraltarians are referred to as llanitos, which literally means people of the flats. Interestingly the people of La linea themselves used to be referred to as Llanitos since they actually inhabit the plains and marsh lands surrounding Gibraltar. The people of La Linea have traditionally found work in Gibraltar, although this was adversely affected by the total closure of the border between 1969 and 1982. Since the border was fully reopened in 1985 many Gibraltarians have moved to La Línea, where property prices and the cost of living are much lower and there is greater access to shopping, leisure facilities and entertainment. La Línea is a major supplier of fruit and vegetables to Gibraltar; other industries include the manufacture of cork, liquor, and fish paste. It is also an important military garrison with substantial fortifications and a port.
