LTU International Airways is a German airline. The initials stand for the German phrase LuftTransport-Unternehmen ("air transport enterprise"). LTU was founded on October 20, 1955, in Frankfurt and has been based in Dusseldorf since 1961.

LTU runs very popular US routes from its Dusseldorf hub and directly competes on some of them with Lufthansa, the Germany's flag carrier. LTU did run well frequented services from Dusseldorf to Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai, but they were dropped.

The airline offers flights worldwide and is majority owned by dba (60%). Its hub is located at the Düsseldorf International Airport. Hans-Rudolf Woehrl, the owner of dba, is currently planning to link the operations of LTU and dba, with dba flying inside Germany and LTU serving international destinations.

In the meantime, Woehrl has decided to reduce his share in the company and is selling in excess of 20% of his holding to Juergen Marbach, the long-time CEO of LTU International.

The main problem is that LTU International has been running at a sizeable loss for several years now, funded by REWE in Cologne, and there is no indication this will change in the near future.
