The IG postal area is a group of 11 postal districts in north east Greater London which are subdivisions of six post towns.
The main sorting office is in Ilford and the area served includes parts of the London Borough of Redbridge and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. A small part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest is covered by the IG8 postal district. Parts of the Epping Forest district of Essex are covered by the IG7, IG9 and IG10 postal districts.

In April 2005, a local businessman started a campaign to have IG1 postcodes changed to London E19, on the pretext that IG1 is not recognised as a London postcode. He argued that so doing would help local businesses. A Royal Mail spokesman, however, said campaigners in Ilford had "virtually no hope" of changing their postcode. *.

This move has the opposite motives to a group in London SE2 who wish to have their postcode changed to adjacent DA7 citing higher insurance for their houses, belongings and cars as reason to change. Royal Mail said they have never changed the first part of a postcode for these reasons. *
