Hendrick Brouwer (1581 - August 7, 1643) was a Dutch sea explorer. From 1632 to 1636 he was governor-general of the Dutch East Indies. In 1611, Brouwer found a better route from South Africa to Java by sailing eastward for about 4,000 miles (6,400 km), then turning north to Batavia. He is thus credited for discovering the Roaring Forties. The route is also sometimes known as the Brouwer Route. In 1643, he travelled to Chile to fight the Spanish and look for gold.
