The Guozijian (国子监 guózǐjiàn), sometimes called the Imperial Academy or Imperial College, was the central national institute of learning in Chinese dynasties after the Sui. It was the highest institute of learning in China's traditional educational system.
Imperial Academies were located in the national capital of each dynasty -- Chang'an, Luoyang, Kaifeng, and Nanjing. Starting with the Ming there were two Imperial Academies, one in Nanjing and one in Beijing. The Qing Imperial Academy, located in Guozijian Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing, was the last Guozijian in China and is an important national cultural asset.
