The Gross Primary Productivity of an ecosystem is the rate at which it accumulates biomass, including the energy it uses for the process of respiration.
The Gross Primary Productivity should not be confused with the Net Primary Productivity. This refers to the rate at which an ecosystem accumulates biomass minus the energy used for the process of respiration.

Both the Gross Primary Productivity and Net Primary Productivity are measured in kg/m²/year.
