Between 1707 and 1998, Scotland did not have its own government, except the distinct legal system. In other words, it did not have its own executive and legislative branches, but was ruled directly from London.

The Parliament of Scotland and the national government were abolished with the passage of the Acts of Union 1707, replaced with the Parliament of Great Britain. In 1998, with the Scotland Act 1998, the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Executive were established with devolved power from Westminster.
