Frankia is a genus of nitrogen fixing filamentous bacteria that live in symbiosis with actinorhizal plants, similar to Rhizobia. Bacteria of this genus form root nodules.

Actinorhizal plants are classified in eight families. They are a diverse group of mostly woody dicots found on all continents except for Antarctica. Many are common plants, like alder, bayberry, sweetfern, Dryas, Chamaebatia and Coriaria.
