Foyle's War is a British detective television series. It was created by Anthony Horowitz, who also writes most of the episodes. It is broadcast on ITV, which commissioned it as a replacement of sorts for Inspector Morse (though it is an original work, rather than drawn from books as was Morse). The series is set in the Second World War in Hastings, England, where Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) attempts to catch criminals who are taking advantage of the confusion the war has created. He is assisted by his driver Samantha "Sam" Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks) and Det. Sgt. Paul Milner (Anthony Howell), who lost a leg during the British Norwegian Campaign. Foyle is quiet, methodical and very observant and is frequently underestimated by his foes. Many of his cases concern profiteering, the black market and murder. Foyle often comes up against high-ranking officials in the British military or intelligence services who would prefer that he mind his own business, but he is tenacious in seeking justice. A widower and a veteran of World War I, Foyle wishes to be back in uniform again. He requests a transfer to the war department several times in the first two seasons of the show, though by the end of the third season he appears to have accepted that this will not happen and that his detective work is just as important, in its own way, to the war effort. Each episode runs for around 100-105 minutes, filling a two-hour slot when commercials are included. The stories are largely self-contained, though there are some running strands, mainly involving the career of Foyle's son Andrew (played by Julian Ovenden), a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force, or Foyle's countinuing relationships with cameo characters. In the United States the series has been shown by PBS. The first season went out under its Masterpiece Theatre banner and the second and third seasons as a part of Mystery!. In Australia the series has been shown by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation although it is unknown when they will show Series 4. In Canada it is being shown by History Television. In New Zealand it is screened on UKTV. The fifth series has been completed and the sixth (and final) series will be produced in 2007. In Arabic countries the series recently began airing on MBC 4 as one of the channel's Ramadan debut programs on September 24.
