Fat Freddy's Drop are a seven-piece roots/dub/reggae/jazz/soul band from Wellington, New Zealand.

The group's first major release was a live album, Live at the Matterhorn, a lengthy jam session recorded in a popular Wellington night club. Their first studio album, Based on a True Story was released on 2 May 2005. After only a day of release it had gone gold and was number one in the New Zealand album charts despite having little advertising or marketing. The album has so far produced one single, "Wandering Eye", which spent 17 weeks in the RIANZ Top 40 Singles Chart and peaking at number six.

They dominated the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards (5 October), taking awards in every category in which they were nominated: Best Group, Best Album, Best New Zealand Roots Group and the Peoples Choice Award. On December 18 2005 the group were awarded the Worldwide "Album of the Year Award", as voted for by over 20,000 listeners of Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 'Worldwide' show.

They won three awards at the 2006 New Zealand Music Awards (18 October). The People's Choice Award, the Highest Selling NZ Album (for Based On A True Story) and Best Music Video for the single Wandering Eye.*
