Eliza is an early 1970s adaptation for Microsoft BASIC of ELIZA designed by Creative Computing which serves as a computer psychoanalyst. Eliza actually pays attention to what you say and comes up with an appropriate response. The fact that Eliza only recognizes 36 keywords, and knows 112 responses, 38 of which are constructed from client input, makes the conversation rather funny. Eliza responds to the first key phrase she recognizes, and in order of priority ("YOU CAN'T" before "YOU"). Responses may take Eliza up to 10 seconds to generate. The game appeared on pages 56 and 57 of the book What to Do After You Hit Return or P.C.C.'s First Book of Computer Games.
History The game, first written as ELIZA was originally written by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT. It originated in LISP, and was later converted to BASIC by Jeff Schrager and to Microsoft BASIC by Steve North. A Sample Run of the Game User input has been bolded. Computer output is in normal text.
