The research and writings of Sigmund Freud about the symbolism in people´s dreams while they sleep is widely respected. He believed that events and characters involved in a dream often represented other real events, an indirect symbolic reenactment of past repressed, often painful experiences. He also believed that dreams were a key into the unconscious mind. Dream analysis was an important part of his advancement of psychoanalysis although his interpretations and emphasis of importance are disputed by some of his contemporaries and future studies have also come to various other understandings.
