In biology, to dissolve means to separate liquids from solids to gases. That eventually turn into evaporation. That means that dissolving is the complete cycle of science.

In chemistry, it is the act of solvation, a solute is dissolved in a solvent, creating a solution. A solute may be solid, liquid, or gaseous.

In film and video editing, it means a gradual transition between pieces of footage. See dissolve (film).

The term also refers to the process of dispersing into smaller parts or making something disappear.
