The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions was a UK Cabinet position created in 1997, with responsibility for the Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions. The position (and department) were created for John Prescott.
Since 1995/96 the DETR have commissioned annual surveys of local authorities in England and Wales to collect information on the collection, treatment and disposal of municipal and household waste.

The position and department were created by merging the positions and responsibilities of Secretary of State for Environment, the Secretary of State for Transport and some other functions. In June 2001 the department was separated into the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, with Environment being merged into the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. All three departments were given their own Secretaries of State. In May 2002 the Local Government and the Regions portfolios were separated from Transport and added to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
