A deliberate misspelling is a word that is purposely spelled incorrectly. This phenomenon became a popular method to evade profanity filters in chat rooms and online games. Other famous examples include the notorious fcuk clothing brand.
Use in gaming and chats A deliberate misspelling may be derived from a typo such as teh and pwn (or pwned). These were initially simple misspellings until people started using them in online games to appear to be more elite. Such words have gained considerable popularity in the online gaming community and are often converted to leet speak. Sometimes deliberate misspellings are used to convey excitement but these are more deliberate typos. Example: OMG!!11ONE11 im soo ecxietdt i cnat eevn hlod teh shfit adn oen kyes dwon at teh smae tiem means "Oh my god!!! I'm so excited I can't even hold the shift and one keys down at the same time." Sometimes deliberate misspellings come in the form of a "cobble" that includes non-letter symbols to evade a trademarked name filter in a video game, such as HU£K or B_a_t_m_a_n. OMG PWNED!!11!!oneone is also a very common misspelling. Use in online mispelling Misspelling of keywords has been employed as an online marketing tactic to capitalize on misspellings entered in search engines. Though many search engines attempt to correct for misspellings, misspelled keywords can still bring in significant visitor traffic. Often these misspellings have been created by a misspelling generator. See also | ||||||||
