A defensive war is one of the causes that justify war by the criteria of The Just War tradition. In the view of Carl von Clausewitz and others, defense has the advantage over offense with the downside that it is more limited in what can be achieved. An example of defensive war is the battle between German and Russian Armies in Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
